Insect Craze

I have a fascination with insects.  I especially love the cicada and will often find ones that have died in my path.  On our family vacations and summer activities, I will often photograph assorted insects and butterflies.  I have a small jar of insects that I have collected.

I have recently completed a series of small paintings of insects using my collection.

My kids think I am odd and yet....

My influence continues as my daughter completed a studio final using insects. She is a fiber art major in art school.  She used a wood lathe and created a dragon fly and butterfly body.  She carved wood wings for both.  She dyed the wood and the silk and added some embroidery details on the butterfly.  She dyed the silk using a Japanese Shibori method of dying.

My son is an art student in high school.  He recently finished this mosquito wire sculpture.  His teacher is entering it in Scholastic Art and Writing.

Maybe, I am not so odd after all.  I do love that my kids are able to enjoy art as much as I do.

American Quilter Cover Story - Anita's Art Quilt

The textile artist began in my memory with my Grandmother, Ruth.  As a mother of 11 children, she was a resourceful woman who utilized a sewing machine and crochet needles for need and wants for her family.  I learned to sew on a 1950s Viking Sewing Machine that now resides in my mother's home.  I just handed off my mother's 1970s Viking to my daughter, who is a Fiber Arts Students at KCAI.  A hearty machine that I have used for many years.
My talented Mother taught me to sew and has enjoyed making many things over the years. Her passion of the last several years has been quilting.  She enters several pieces every year in the Iowa State Fair and has received many ribbons.  She is a former President of the Des Moines Quilter's Guild.  Her most recent accomplishment is being on the cover of The American Quilter (November 2011).  The cover is an art quilt that she created as part of an American Quilter Society sponsored show.  Great job mom!

Save Room for Cake

At Last.. I completed this set of three cake paintings.   The paintings are from an image of my own of a cake I made for one of my family members.  A colorful set reminiscent of Wayne Thiebaud.  (one of my favorite painters).  These are acrylic paintings on 12" gallery wrapped canvas.   They will soon be available in my Etsy shop.

A Summer Season Full of Custom Made Projects

This summer was probably my busiest on record. I was able to work around the many chauffeured activities of my kids, vacation and other leisure time fun.

I taught 10 art classes for students at the Daily Grind Coffee Shop and was featured in a small article in the Indianola Record Herald. (see previous post).

I also increased the inventory of hand dyed jackets in my Etsy Store. I am happy to say I have sold a few.

My most successful venture has been doing custom cushions and pillows for clients that have contacted me through my Etsy Store. The arrangements have worked out very well. Here are a few pictures.

Another fun-filled school year is about to begin. I look forward to new adventures in art. I hope to still fit in a few custom projects during the school year.

Custom Made Bench Seat Cushion

This is a custom made bench seat cushion. It is made to order for this bench. It is an example of a custom made cushion that I can make for you.

This cushion was made custom for this bench using 3.5" high-density foam. I also wrapped it with a layer of batting for extra padding. The cushion also has welting/piping trim on the top and bottom seams in the same fabric as the cushion. I can make welting in a contrasting fabric as well.  Prices vary depending on size.  This one is listed in my ETSY shop for custom orders.

Freelance Seamstress II

Better Homes and Gardens, Special Interest Publications, Before and After, Spring 2007. This was probably my biggest job with Meredith Publications. The project consisted of an outdoor patio with four different color schemes. I created the cushion covers for the outdoor furniture, pillows and curtains. (Click on the picture to close up view.)

Freelance Seamstress

Creative Home, Spring 2008 issue - a Better Homes and Gardens Creative Collection magazine. I have worked as a freelance seamstress for Meredith Publications. In this issue of Creative Home, I sewed the ottoman skirt and cushion, window swag and checked pillows. Also in this issue, is a closet makeover in which I made the bench cushion, small green pillow and the white roman shade.
Please feel free to contact me with your custom project!
